Curch S. Giovanni in Ranui

Ranui Hof

The Church of St. Johann in Ranui belongs to the Ranuihof farmstead and can be found in the Ranui meadows alongside the farm. It stands out in the imposing mountain landscape, and it is hard for hikers not to be impressed by the small Baroque church with its onion dome.
Wakes festival: feast day of St. Johann Nepomuk, 16th May.

The small church has a shingle-covered saddle roof, a three sided rood screen and a tower on the north-eastern corner, whose copper-clad onion dome is crowned with a star.

The entrance façade displays rich decorative paintings and a fresco of the church’s patron saint.

The façade inscription of St. Johann in Ranui "built by Michael Jenner in 1744” was probably added in his honour by his descendents, as Michael Jenner died in 1723. His two sons had died before him; however his granddaughter Maria Barbara, who had married Georg von Mayerl of Bolzano in 1720, and had inherited Ranui, and their cousin, Joseph Anton Jenner, who often stayed there, were still living. It was Joseph Anton Jenner who built St. Johann. In the inside of the church a barrel vault bears a fresco depicting the church’s patron saint. The most beautiful decoration in the church is the altar made of marbled wood and the two altar paintings, which are highly valued.Nepomuk

The main picture shows St. Nepomuk, who is holding out his tongue – symbolic of his famed discretion, which was the cause of his martyrdom – to the Christ child who is sitting in the lap of the Mother of God.

A cycle of paintings consisting of 9 pictures can be seen on the side walls. They show scenes from the life of St. Nepomuk and give the interior a magnificent appearance. (Detail: Queen confessing to St. Johann, picture, right.)

The church can be visited and used, upon request, for small celebrations; the keys are held at the Ranuihof.
